It’s important to have an appointment with your dentist at least every six months to have your teeth examined and cleaned. Although many people think their teeth are healthy and in good condition, they should still visit their dentist regularly to keep their teeth and gums healthy. Treating any dental issues early on can save you from having to deal with a lot of hassle in the long run, possibly even preventing the need for a tooth extraction or root canal treatment.
The dentist will start your check-up by checking all of your teeth for cavities, broken fillings, plaque and tartar. Any plaque and tartar that has built up on your teeth can cause oral diseases.
Your dentist may then conduct a thorough teeth cleaning procedure. Although brushing and flossing will help to remove plaque from your teeth, you won’t be able to remove tartar through everyday oral hygiene practices. During the cleaning process, your dentist will start scaling your teeth to remove any tartar found. After this, your teeth will be polished with a paste substance that removes surface stains off teeth.
The dentist may also examine your gums by using a tool that measures the depth of the spaces between your teeth and gums. If these spaces are shallow, this means your gums are healthy. But if the spaces are deep, you might be suffering from gum disease.
Your dentist may also take some x-rays in order to detect any cavities between your teeth. This should happen every two years or if you ever start visiting another dental clinic.
Once the check-up is complete, the dentist will advise you on any other dental treatments that you will require. Usually such treatments are required for repairing stained, chipped, crooked or missing teeth, or restoring teeth affected by tooth decay or gum disease.
