Anyone who undergoes a tooth extraction procedure should only consume soft foods and liquids for the first few days or at least the first 24 hours after the procedure. Soft cool foods such as ice cream, yogurt, pudding and jelly are highly recommended, as they don’t require much chewing and can be soothing to eat, although any ice cream should not contain any solid mix-ins. After the first 24 hours, you can start to eat lukewarm soft foods such as mashed potatoes, pancakes, scrambled eggs, oatmeal and broth-based soups that don’t contain big pieces of meat. You should be able to go back to your usual diet once you feel comfortable to do so.
Anyone who has had a tooth extracted should avoid consuming any foods that are hard, chewy, crunchy or brittle during the recovery period, such as meat, chips, nuts and popcorn. Eating these foods can be difficult and painful, and they can also get trapped in the extraction area where they can cause infection and other complications. Spicy and acidic foods as well as soft drinks should also be avoided, as these can cause irritation and aggravate the extraction site. Alcohol should also be avoided during the recovery period, especially if you’re using pain medications.
